A shadow market for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Worries

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of uncertain source.

Several professionals said the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up groups with numerous of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.

After minutes of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Item Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts show black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to include new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should last, vendors give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Security Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are turning to social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to possibly significant health risks”.
